Liesel Meminger knew death at a very early age, when her younger brother died sleeping in front of her, in a train, on a snowy night. Liesel also got to know abandonment at that early age, when her mother left her to be taken cared of by strangers, her foster parents.

But that didn’t make her hate life, because she got to have a loving family, a dear friend, a partner, and of course, the hobby of book thievery.

The story is set in Nazi Germany, during the World War II at the time of Holocaust.
